{"id":1015,"date":"2022-06-05T11:44:48","date_gmt":"2022-06-05T10:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/binarywords.com\/?p=1015"},"modified":"2022-06-05T11:44:48","modified_gmt":"2022-06-05T10:44:48","slug":"si-o-no","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/binarywords.com\/en\/2022\/06\/05\/si-o-no\/","title":{"rendered":"Yes or no?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days ago, speaking about personalized T-shirts, my daughter Alicia told us that her ideal one would be black, plain, with a single word written in big white letters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have to admit, it would suit her perfectly \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, I\u00b4m delighted that she\u00b4s so self-confident at thirteen years of age. Because for me personally, it\u00b4s taken a considerable effort to learn to say <strong>no<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does that ring a bell? Saying <strong>yes<\/strong>, to everything, maybe because of willingness to help others, not wanting to disappoint anyone, striving to be liked and thus feel loved and appreciated, or maybe because we think we\u00b4re indispensable\u2026 For these and many other reasons, we give away our time and energy to anyone who would ask. Sometimes, until we can no longer bear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u00b4s one thing we need to realize: <strong>every time we say YES to something or someone, there is another something or someone that we\u00b4re saying NO to<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/binarywords.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/pexels-photo-5669602-3397370473-1654372940113.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"676\" height=\"425\" data-attachment-id=\"1019\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/binarywords.com\/en\/pexels-photo-5669602\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/binarywords.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/pexels-photo-5669602-3397370473-1654372940113.jpeg?fit=892%2C561&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"892,561\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-title=\"judgement scale and gavel in judge office\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;Brass justice scales with both plates empty&lt;\/p&gt;\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/binarywords.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/pexels-photo-5669602-3397370473-1654372940113.jpeg?fit=676%2C425&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/binarywords.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/pexels-photo-5669602-3397370473-1654372940113.jpeg?resize=676425&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1019\" srcset=\"\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" data-srcset=\"\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Who are you saying <strong>no<\/strong> to, when you forget to set limits and say yes to everything? <strong>yes<\/strong>? <\/li><li>How much time and energy are left for yourself (and the things that you choose) at the end of the day, the week, the month?<\/li><li>And how much space is left for you to grow, to enjoy, to welcome something new and unexpected in your life?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this stage, you may have realized that you want to choose more consciously your <strong>yes<\/strong>es\u2026 but how can you start saying no <strong>no<\/strong> , in order to leave room for them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One interesting perspective can be taking the word <strong>NO<\/strong> as an acronym: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>NO<\/strong> = <strong>N<\/strong>ext <strong>O<\/strong>pportunity <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I love this idea because it has a double interpretation. On the one hand, when we\u00b4re asked for something that\u00b4s going to consume our time and energy, we can give ourselves permission to evaluate it and decide, and if in reality what we want is to leave space for something else that we value more, then we can respond in a kind, assertive and conscious way, secure in the knowledge of why we do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, when we happen to be on the receiving end of that <strong>no<\/strong>, the acronym will help us to see that it\u00b4s not the end of the world and that there\u00b4s no need to take it personally. Because, if we want to set limits and get others to respect them, it\u00b4s only fair that we in turn respect the limits of others\u2026 And who knows, maybe that <strong>no<\/strong> turns out to be exactly what we need in order to wake up, learn something new, adjust, make progress, and end up finding an even better opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would you dare put this into practice?
