{"id":3747,"date":"2024-05-27T02:25:57","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T01:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/binarywords.com\/?p=3747"},"modified":"2024-05-27T02:41:17","modified_gmt":"2024-05-27T01:41:17","slug":"un-truquito-emocional","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/binarywords.com\/en\/2024\/05\/27\/un-truquito-emocional\/","title":{"rendered":"An emotional little trick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the things I love about my job is that I occasionally get to deliver a talk or workshop about a professional development topic, which also ends up being a personal development topic, as both go inevitably hand in hand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, for the second year in a row, I got the chance to contribute to my company\u00b4s internship program (an intern role would be similar to a \u201cbecario\u201d in Spain) with an interactive session on one of my favourite topics: <strong>emotional intelligence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summarising very briefly, <strong>emotional intelligence can be defined as the ability to<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recognise, understand and manage our own emotions, <\/strong>and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recognise, understand and influence the emotions of others.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may sound a bit odd to you, us talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/binarywords.com\/en\/2021\/12\/13\/emociones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>emotions<\/strong><\/a> in a professional setting\u2026 Well, as it turns out, <strong>your \u201cemotional quotient\u201d (or EQ) often matters more than your intelligence quotient, especially at work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why? Because at the end of the day, <strong>above all else, we are human beings<\/strong>, we are people. And even though we get the impression that work is about tasks, processes, systems, programs and the like (or whatever is relevant depending on your job), <strong>deep down, it\u2019s always about people<\/strong>, directly or indirectly - colleagues, bosses, clients, suppliers, users, patients or whatever they may be. We are always dealing with people, starting with ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that <strong>emotional intelligence can be trained<\/strong>, and it produces double benefits, personally and professionally. In either domain, the more you get to understand yourself and those around you better, the more you\u2019ll be able to progress in life. It\u2019s that simple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/binarywords.com\/en\/2023\/07\/24\/reprograma-tu-vida-episodio-7-pon-atencion-a-las-notificaciones\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/binarywords.com\/es_es\/2023\/07\/24\/reprograma-tu-vida-episodio-7-pon-atencion-a-las-notificaciones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>7th episode of <em>Reprogram your life<\/em><\/strong><\/a> we looked at how emotions generally work, what the main emotions are (the so-called <em>universal emotions<\/em>), and the specific message that each of them conveys. Stop what you\u2019re doing for a second.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>T<\/strong> for <strong><em>Take a breath<\/em><\/strong> (or <em>take a step back<\/em>) - Take a moment to breathe consciously. In and out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>O<\/strong> for <strong><em>Observe<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 What are you feeling right here and now? What\u2019s that emotion (name it), and what is it telling you? What\u2019s the message?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>P<\/strong> for <strong>Proceed<\/strong> \u2013 Once you\u2019ve received the message, what do you want to do with it? How do you want to respond to this situation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This technique helps us to create a bit of space between the emotion, which is spontaneous and we can\u00b4t control, and the actions that follow the emotion, which we do have the ability to control, but only if we snap out of auto-pilot in order to choose more consciously. <strong>Managing our emotions appropriately will allow us to respond to situations instead of reacting to them, and consequently get better results<\/strong>, both for us and for those around us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This quote from Viktor Frankl explains it beautifully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Between stimulus and response there is a space. <br>In that space is our power to choose our response. <br>In our response lies our growth and our freedom.<\/p><cite>Viktor Frankl<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Una de las cosas que me encanta de mi trabajo es que me permite de vez en cuando dar una charla o taller sobre alg\u00fan tema de desarrollo profesional, que luego acaba siendo tambi\u00e9n de desarrollo personal, porque ambos van inevitablemente de la mano.
