Continuing with the art tour around my house, let me show you another phrase that\u00b4s decorating the walls, in this case in my daughters\u00b4 room. It was a present from their cousin Isabel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u00b4m not telling you it will be easy, I\u00b4m telling you it will be worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love this phrase for two reasons: one, I really believe this is true in many situations, and two, I think the choice of words here is very very clever. Because even though in theory this is telling us that, whatever it is, is not going to be easy, given that our brains find it difficult to process the \u201cnot\u201d bit, deep down what this is telling us is that it IS going to be easy\u2026 or at least, not that difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words that we use when speaking (and thinking) do matter, and they matter a lot. Saying that something is difficult is not the same as saying that it\u00b4s not easy: the latter is somehow a \u201clighter\u201d expression than the former, and our brains find it easier to digest\u2026 In fact, the practice of using the word \u201cnot\u201d this way is a little NLP trick that I\u00b4ll tell you more about some other time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
