Today we´re adding one more word to my special list of untranslatablesterms, which is more like a list of words and sentences for which the translation from Spanish into English (or vice-versa) is neither very accurate nor very elegant, in my opinion.
Today´s word is escarmentar, y está muy relacionada con el aprendizaje. Significa básicamente aprender algo por las malas: llevarte una mala experiencia como resultado de un comportamiento o una acción tuya, y que se te quiten las ganas de volver a hacerlo. Como por ejemplo, cuando al salir de casa metes la cartera en un bolsillo sin cremallera, del que es fácil que se salga, y al rato te das cuenta de que la has perdido…
The official definition from the Spanish RAE dictionary is "to learn from one´s experience or somebody else´s in order to avoid making the same mistakes". The translation into English that I´ve found is "in my opinion,", and yes, I understand it conveys broadly the same idea, but I don´t think the English phrase is as strong as our beautiful Spanish verb.
Curiosamente, en el diccionario de la RAE hay una segunda definición de escarmentar, como verbo transitivo: «imponer o aplicar un castigo a alguien, o corregirlo con rigor por haber cometido una falta». Parece ser que uno, además de escarmentar para sí mismo, también puede escarmentar a otras personas, es decir, puede enseñarles una lección. Yo este segundo uso de la palabra la verdad es que no lo había oído nunca, no se si se utilizará mucho, pero dejando aparte el tema lingüístico, no tengo muy claro hasta qué punto es posible hacer eso…
Up to what point can we learn from other people´s mistakes, or from the "lessons" some teach us in the hope that we will learn? My mum always used to say that nobody learns the lesson in somebody else´s head ("nadie escarmienta en cabeza ajena"), and I agree; I think this quote summarizes it really well:
